Coils

Coils, also known as coil springs, are firm springs that are a key component of most classic mattresses. They make sure the mattress gives you support as you lie down. Coil spring mattresses can be a great choice, but they do become uncomfortable as they get older.

Edge Guard

Mattresses with an edge guard basically have a raised edge to keep you from rolling off the edge. These can be a good choice for young kids who are transitioning away from beds with sides and also for older adults who may suffer a serious injury were they to roll off the mattress.

Memory Foam

An alternative to coil spring mattresses, memory foam mattresses are made from a dense, elastic foam that forms to your body as you sleep. Some people love this type of mattress, and others do not. So, make sure you lie on one before you buy it.

Box Spring

A box spring is a sturdy, framed box that you place under a traditional mattress. It gives the mattress more support. Some modern mattresses are not designed to be paired with box springs, so check whether or not your mattress requires one before you buy.

Pillow Top

As you might have guessed, mattresses with a pillow top have a soft, pillow-like top layer that makes them more comfortable to lie down on. Some people do find these mattresses too warm, so if you sleep hot, this may not be the option for you.

Bunky Board

A bunky board is a stiff board you can place under the mattress for support. Or, some mattresses come with a bunky board already attached to one side. You either use a bunky board or a box spring, but not both.
